12 Home Organization Hacks for Small Spaces

When floor space is tight, the answer is to go up, behind doors, and under the bed. These ideas work in apartments and rentals, and most need no tools or drilling.

Go vertical

  1. Use a tall, narrow shelf. A ladder shelf or tall bookcase holds far more than a wide, low one in the same footprint. Anchor tall furniture to the wall if your lease allows.
  2. Hang things on removable hooks. Adhesive hooks hold keys, towels, and bags without holes in the wall. Check the weight rating on the package.
  3. Add shelf risers in cabinets. A simple riser doubles the usable space for plates, mugs, and canned goods.
  4. Put a tension rod under the sink. Hang spray bottles from it by their triggers and free up the cabinet floor.

Use the backs of doors

  1. Hang an over-door organizer. Pocket organizers hold shoes, cleaning supplies, or pantry snacks on the back of any door.
  2. Add over-door hooks for coats and robes. They clip over the top of the door, so nothing gets screwed in.
  3. Store the ironing board or mop on the door. An over-door rack keeps tall, awkward items out of the closet.

Tame drawers and hidden space

  1. Use drawer dividers. Adjustable dividers stop drawers from becoming junk piles and make everything visible at a glance.
  2. Fold clothes upright. Filing shirts vertically in drawers fits more and lets you see every item.
  3. Use the space under the bed. Low, lidded under-bed bins with wheels hold off-season clothes and spare bedding. Bed risers add extra clearance if you need it.
  4. Choose furniture that stores things. A storage ottoman or bench with a lid gives you seating and a hidden bin.
  5. Label everything. A label maker or masking tape and a marker helps everyone in the house put things back in the same place.

Quick answer

To organize a small space, use vertical storage like tall shelves and adhesive hooks, hang over-door organizers, add drawer dividers, and store off-season items in under-bed bins. Most of these work in rentals with no drilling.
